Match Report

Dave Kershaw maintained his 100% record of winning the toss and duly invited Sprotborough to bat first on a damp wicket. Runs were hard to come by and the regular fall of wickets ensured that the run rate was held in check. Kevin Grimshaw 2-12, Dave Exley 1-17 and Steve Hargreaves 1-28 were well supported by Ged McInerny who only conceeded 9 runs from his maximum 8 over spell.

Only A. Ward (50) managed to make progress, but the scoring rate was poor and a final target of 109 seemed well short of a decent total. Dave Kershaw 2-15 and Chris Hall 0-19, bowled well in the final overs when with wickets in hand Sprotborough attempted to hit the much needed boundaries.

In response Stainborough also found it difficult to score freely, and the loss of an early wicket gave the bowlers hope. After 20 overs the score had crept to 31-1, but the fall of the second wicket (Ged McInerny 13), brought Chris Hall to the crease. With the rain clouds gathering he wanted the game over and duly dispatched the bowling into the Stainborough neighbourhood. His quickfire 40 included three sixes and five fours and put the match firmly in Stainboroughs grasp. Dave Exley had been steadily accumulating his 30 and when he also fell with the score on 91, Sprotborough had a glimmer of hope. As the hailstones began to fall it was left to Luke Selwood to hit the winning boundary to see Stainborough proceed to the next round.

Most Valuble Player

Chris Hall was announced MVP for an excellent 8 over bowling spell at the end of the innings which cost only 19 runs, followed by a whirlwind 40 which ended Sprotboroughs hopes of a result.
