Match Report
|
| |
Having lost the toss and being asked to
bat on what looked to be a questionable
wicket, Stainborough made a good start reaching
29 before Chris Hall (18) fell victim to
a short delivery that did not bounce. Three
more wickets fell in quick succession and
at 41-4 it was not looking good for the
visitors. However, the introduction of John
Hall saw a more positive approach as he
hit an excellent 31. Meanwhile, Richard
Umbers was playing a faultless innings that
included a number of excellent cover drives.
He was extremely unfortunate to be given
out L.B.W. on 44, one of four L.B.W. decisions
to go against the batting side. Tom Markham
made an important 17 n.o. late in the innings
to take the final total to 138.
Stainborough had to bowl well to defend
the total and Tom Markham made an immediate
impact with the first three Sprotborough
batsmen back in the pavilion with only 16
runs on the board. He was assisted by Jonathan
Pepper (who actually held onto a slip catch)
and Dave Kershaw who took a brilliant catch
at Gully. Kershaw then took the important
wicket of Howsmen (25) who looked dangerous.
Ged McInerny took advantage of the uncertainty
caused by the deteriorating wicket and took
three wickets with Richand Mills taking
two outstanding slip catches. At 54-8 the
promotion chasing side were in turmoil,
however A. Harvey (24) made a spirited effort
before Jonathan Pepper mopped up the last
two wickets with the total at 89.
