Stainborough arrived at Crofton with a
very inexperienced team which contained
only four regular 2nd team players and five
juniors including three U15 players and
two U13's.After much discussion from the
"senior" players it was felt we would have
a hard task on our hands.
However, after stand in captain G. Webster
lost the toss and Crofton decided to bat
first Stainborough looked in control from
the first ball. L. Selwood claimed both
opening batsmen for 0, one of which had
scored a classy century against Stainborough
on the opening day of the season. Selwood
finished with figures on 3-12 off his 8
overs, conceding only 3 runs off the bat.
P. Brown also bowled very economically
at the other end and deserved more than
the 1 wicket as his reward. With the score
on 32-4, Stainborough introduced J. Malkin
and J. Rennison into the attack. Both aged
15, they bowled with maturity beyond their
years. J Rennison finishing with figures
of 4-12, and J. Malkin 1-17. Crofton were
dismissed for a total of 68, inside 34 overs,
with only 2 batsmen making double figures
and the top scorer 11.
Stainborough's peformance in the field
was near perfect with every catch being
held and very few mistakes. Special mention
to J. Malkin for holding onto 3 catches
and 12 year old Ben Armitage, who held an
excellent catch at square leg for the final
wicket of the innings.
Chasing a low score, Stainborough sent
out P. Brown and R. Grange who knocked the
runs off for no wicket inside 14 overs,
Brown finishing 31 not out, and Grange 36
not out including a massive six to finish
the game off in style.
It was an excellent effort all round,
with the 5 youngsters all playing their
part, proving that, with recent improvements
off the field, the future at Stainborough
is looking very bright indeed.
