Fishlake finish first in run feast.
Stainborough skipper Londt lost the toss
yet again on a sunny afternoon and Fishlake
elected to bat with one of their players
still on his way to the ground. Little did
they know that they would unfortunately
start and finish the game with 10 men.
Openers Davies and Johnson got off to a
solid start although Stainborough's opening
bowlers both started rustily. Pepper had
Johnson (23) caught one handed by Kershaw
at mid off with the score on 38. Davies
(36) and Ellis (69) then put on 89 for the
second wicket. Ellis hit 18 off the first
4 balls of Singh's first over with some
fine hitting before being caught by Kershaw
off Archer. Davies soon followed caught
on the boundary by Ward off Singh leaving
Fishlake on 146-3. Walker (37 not out) and
Sheldon (55) then put on 76 for the fifth
wicket with Sheldon hitting 4 sixes taking
the score well over 200. Pepper (13-2-50-4)
came back on towards the end and claimed
3 wickets in the final over with Fishlake
finishing on a substantial total of 247-8.
Pepper bowled well in two spells on a warm
and muggy afternoon and no doubt lost a
few pounds ready for a hearty tea prepared
by Fletch complete with pork pies and brown
sauce. The plastic cheese was a bit tough
to eat though but would no doubt suffice
for bowling markers in the coming weeks.
Londt and Gilfillan got the Stainborough
reply off to a flying start reaching 40
in the 7th over. Fishlake opening bowler
Morley collapsed clutching his knee on the
fifth ball of his fifth over. He could not
continue bowling and left the field. Apparently
suffering from an old football injury he
took the field again after 15 minutes but
did not bowl again. He was replaced at the
Strafford Arms end by Johnson.
Fishlake's attack was further depleted
in the next over when Londt launched a blistering
drive straight back at left arm bowler P
Moores. The bowler raised his hands for
the catch but the drive went straight through
catching him full on the forehead. The sound
on the boundary was horrible as the ball
ricocheted past the stumps at the other
end and Moores slumped to the ground gushing
blood from his forehead. He was hastily
bandaged and whisked off to hospital for
4 stitches. He literally left his mark on
the wicket on a length just outside the
off stump. All at Stainborough wish him
a speedy recovery.
Londt was looking invincible but was dismissed
caught behind for 46. Gilfillan followed
for 33. Singh (22) and Archer (21) continued
the scoring but other wickets fell. MacFadyen
came to the wicket and continued the scoring
although good bowling by Johnson (19-2-80-3)
and A Moores (11-1-43-1) kept the run rate
rising. Stainborough finished 17 runs short
of Fishlake's total with Rushforth being
bowled on the last ball of the innings giving
10 man Fishlake an extra bowling point for
the 7th wicket. MacFadyen ended on 60 not
out after some fine striking of the ball.
Both teams can be proud of some entertaining
cricket played on a pleasant afternoon in
a good spirit.
